Ruth Roman (n e Gold) was born at Lynn in Massachusetts. She was the daughter of Lithuanian Jewish immigrants Mary Pauline and Abraham Roman. Her father's death in the role of a carnival barker at the age of a young girl, she had to help support the family working both as a cleaner and a server. Ruth lived in the tenement area of poverty in Boston, Massachusetts, where she went to school. The school she attended just two years later in pursuit of acting as a profession. The path she chose to take turned out to be strewn with obstacles: in New York, she obtained a job posing for stills for a crime magazine however, theatrical opportunities eluded her. Her next job was as the "hat check" girl for a nightclub until she decided to quit and relocated to Boston. She was an usherette during the early morning hours and also appeared at the New England Repertory Company by the evening. This was her first permanent acting gig. She also studied drama and ultimately graduated from Bishop-Lee Theatre School.
